Oregon State’s Bullpen Steals the Show as Beavers Struggle at the Plate

Oregon State’s Relievers Carry the Team to a Sweep

In a thrilling weekend of baseball, Oregon State’s bullpen proved to be the difference-maker as they swept Mercer with a 3-1 victory on Sunday afternoon at Goss Stadium. The Beavers (21-5) relied heavily on their relief pitchers, who delivered outstanding performances throughout the series.

Isaac Yeager was one of the standout performers, striking out six batters over 2 1/3 hitless innings in relief. His efforts were crucial in securing the win. Albert Roblez also shined, recording his ninth save of the season, which leads the nation. Roblez struck out three batters in the ninth inning to close out the game, showcasing his ability to perform under pressure.

The Beavers’ relievers combined for an impressive 10 1/3 innings of work during the series. They allowed just two runs on three hits, six walks, and three hit batters, while striking out 22 batters. Coach Mitch Canham praised the depth of his pitching staff, noting that there are “tons of options” available from the bullpen. Nine different players saw action over the weekend, with only Roblez appearing twice.

Key Moments and Strategies

Canham highlighted Yeager’s performance, particularly his focus and ability to hit his spots. Despite one error, Yeager’s overall performance was impressive. He used a variety of pitches, including a breaking ball, to keep the opposing hitters off balance. Canham also mentioned that he hadn’t used Wyatt Queen yet in the series, making it a strategic decision to bring in Yeager in a key matchup.

The offensive struggles of the Beavers were evident, as they went just 1 for 14 with runners in scoring position. They stranded 11 runners, including a runner on third with no outs in the third inning and a runner on second with no outs in the sixth. Despite this, Canham remained optimistic about the team’s approach at the plate.

“I thought what guys have been doing, putting together quality at-bats,” Canham said. “You could tell our guys were trying to push out over the plate and take advantage of it, but right when I saw we were hitting a handful of balls to the left side on a guy working down and away I’m like, this isn’t a good look right now. We got to use the big part of the field.”

Game Highlights

Oregon State took an early lead in the first inning when Jacob Galloway reached on an error, allowing a run to score. Chris Katz tied the game in the third with a two-out RBI single to left field. Mercer’s Eric Segura then got Katz to ground into a double play, ending the threat.

Both starting pitchers, Segura and Jeb Johnson, finished with no-decisions. Segura allowed one run on four hits and two walks with seven strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings, while Johnson gave up one unearned run on four hits, two walks, and one hit batter over five innings.

Yeager came in with a runner on first and one out in the sixth and proceeded to strike out six straight batters, matching a career-high for the senior. Yeager, who spent his first three seasons at Washington, expressed his satisfaction with the performance.

“I was trying to do my job and fill it up and get as many outs until I pass it on to the next guy,” Yeager said. “Feeling it and being able to do what I want with the ball outside of the hit by pitch. I was really happy with it and I’d say it was the best (outing for me) so far.”

Clutch Performances

In the seventh inning, OSU loaded the bases with no outs for Josh Proctor, whose sacrifice fly scored Easton Talt to make it 2-1. A wild pitch plated another run, but the Beavers left two more runners on base to end the frame.

Wyatt Queen took over in the eighth, getting a strikeout to end the inning. Roblez entered in the ninth, and despite pinch hitters Kaleb Huffman and Drew Johnson reaching base, he struck out the side to record his ninth save of the season.

“Even if I fall behind in counts, I want to fight back and try not to walk a guy or hit a guy,” Roblez said. “I want to make contact with the bat or get a guy out with a strikeout.”

Upcoming Schedule

Following the sweep, the Beavers will host Washington at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday before heading to Lamar for a three-game series beginning at 4 p.m. PT on Thursday.
